1 A CONTROVERSIAL ISSUE

Imagine you are a top athlete and you have earned a spot in
an international competition. You need to visit a country
where vaccinations are recommended for diseases that are
not typically found in North America, such as yellow fever
or typhoid. Therefore, your local vaccination program does
not cover them. Why are vaccines required in some places
but not others? Why are there only vaccines for certain
diseases? What if you are opposed to vaccinations?

If we imagine the action of a
vaccine not just in terms of
how it affects a single body
but also in terms of how it
        affects the collective body of
a community, it is fair to think
of vaccination as a kind of
banking of immunity.  In many states, children must provide
proof of vaccination, or valid reasons not
From the book On Immunity: to have it, before they can attend school.
An Inoculation by American Free clinics in California provide vaccinations
author Eula Biss, 2015 for school children who require them.
