INTRODUCTION
Imagine being an eight year old, leaving the land of your birth. You
step into a canoe. Alone. You’re heading to a city far away from your
parents, brother, and sisters. You’re leaving behind a carefree outdoor
life. Where you lived in nature from morning until you laid your head
down to sleep at night. And even then, you might sometimes sleep out
underneath the stars on a particularly warm evening. Once you step
into that canoe your life will become one of books and classrooms, rules
and regulations. No more thrilling in the run of the buffalo across the
wide-open prairie. No more tapping trees for sticky-sweet maple syrup.
This is the story of Cuthbert Grant and how he grew up between these
two worlds. A child of mixed-blood ancestry—Scottish/Métis and
Cree. Formally educated, well-traveled, and accepted by both people.
