Leaving the Land of His Birth
It’s 1801, and eight-year-old Cuthbert Grant, having recently lost his
father, finds himself whisked away from the wild and rugged northwest
country of Canada. Where to? The big city of Montreal. Away from
his mother, brother, and sisters. Far away from the only home he’s
ever known.
Cuthbert was born at Fort Tremblante—a trading post—in what is
now Saskatchewan, Canada. He was named after his Scottish father,
Cuthbert Grant, who was a fur trader and founding partner of
the North West Company. This was one of two major fur-trading
companies in Canada at the time.
