Page 13 - Trashing the Planet: Examining Our Global Garbage Glut
P. 13
Teen volunteers clean up trash in a Detroit, Michigan, neighborhood. Each individual can
make a difference in tackling the global garbage glut.
(www.oceanconservancy.org) and the Plastic Pollution Coalition
(www.plasticpollutioncoalition.org) are fighting for trash-free seas.
The two million members of the National Resources Defense Council
(www.nrdc.org) work to reduce the use of toxic chemicals, slow climate
change, and clean up Earth’s air and water. The World Wildlife Fund
(www.worldwildlife.org) tries to save endangered species. That work
involves fighting the illegal dumping of toxic trash, which can kill plants
and animals.
The Internet offers an abundance of answers to the debris debacle. And
seeking solutions together is so much more constructive than brooding
hopelessly alone. The garbage isn’t going to pick up itself, and anyone who
eats, drinks, and purchases consumer goods owes it to the planet to become
part of the solution rather than remaining part of the problem.
