their particle jets are formed. The continued study will require
scientists around the world to work together to capture data and
make observations.
Scientists have discovered a few other things about particle
jets. In 2016 scientists observed a particle jet that reached an
incredible 18 trillion°F (10 trillion°C). They had thought that the
hottest these jets would be able to get was 179 billion°F (99
billion°C). The scientists have
said they will need to do
more research to understand
particle jets and what makes
them so hot.
Around the same time
as the superhot jets were
found, scientists in South
Africa noticed some strange
behavior in several black
holes that spanned a large
area in space. The jets of
these black holes all pointed
in the same direction. The
astronomers who made
this observation were very
surprised. Nothing in their
research or theories predicted
something like this. “This is
not obviously expected based on our current
understanding of cosmology. It’s a bizarre
finding,” said Romeel Davé, a professor at the University of the
Western Cape in South Africa. Astronomers say that the only
