signs, family members often describe it as, “just being a
teenager” or some other similar answer. Sleeping a lot or being
defiant can certainly be part of being a kid. But these issues can
also point toward possible depression, anxiety, or other
mental illness.
How to Help
Watching a loved one struggling with mental
illness can be a helpless feeling. You may wonder,
What can I do to help?
The biggest thing you can do is talk to them.
People experiencing depression or anxiety often
feel misunderstood. Ask specific questions and
offer support. You should also do some research.
Knowing more about their illness puts you
in a better position to understand what they
are experiencing.
Finally, encourage them to seek help. You might
help them find a local support group. If a teen in
your family is suffering, the National Youth Crisis
Hotline (800-448-4663) might be a good option.
