barred Jews from German schools and universities, prohibited them from
holding jobs with the German government, and restricted their work in
medical, legal, financial, and other professions. Hitler’s anti-Jewish efforts
brought about the Holocaust. In this state-sponsored program, the Nazi
government imprisoned and murdered more than six million Jews and
other “undesirables” (including homosexuals, prisoners of war, non-Jewish
religious minorities, Communists, and the physically and mentally disabled)
before and during the war.
