A Brontë Timeline
April 21, 1816: Charlotte Brontë is born in Thornton, West Yorkshire, in England. She is the
third child born to Maria (née Branwell) and Patrick Brontë, after siblings
Maria and Elizabeth.
June 26, 1817: Branwell Brontë is born in Thornton, West Yorkshire.
July 30, 1818: Emily Brontë is born in Thornton, West Yorkshire.
January 17, 1820: Anne Brontë is born in Thornton, West Yorkshire.
1820: The Brontë family moves to Haworth, West Yorkshire.
1821: Maria Branwell Brontë dies of ovarian cancer.
1824–1825: The four eldest Brontë sisters, Maria, Elizabeth, Charlotte, and Emily, attend
boarding school.
1825: The two eldest Brontë siblings, Maria and Elizabeth, die of tuberculosis.
Their deaths deeply affect their younger sister Charlotte.
1835–1837: Anne attends boarding school.
1838: Emily begins work as a teacher in Miss Patchett’s School for Girls at Law Hill,
near Halifax, West Yorkshire.
1839: Emily leaves her position due to stress and exhaustion and begins to write
at home.
1840: Anne begins work as a governess to the children of Lydia Robinson and the
Reverend Edmund Robinson in North Yorkshire.
1842: Charlotte and Emily travel to Brussels, Belgium, and study under language
teacher Constantin Héger.
Emily returns to Haworth after the death of the siblings’ aunt Elizabeth.
1844: Charlotte returns to Haworth from Brussels.
1845: The four surviving Brontë siblings live at their family home in Haworth.
Branwell loses his position as a tutor for the Robinson family and becomes
addicted to alcohol and opium.
Charlotte convinces her sisters to try publishing their poetry.
