1846: Charlotte, Emily, and Anne adopt literary pseudonyms. Aylott and Jones
publishes the sisters’ joint collection of poetry, crediting the works to the
Bell brothers.
Charlotte writes her first novel, The Professor, about Constantin Héger.
Anne writes her first novel, Agnes Grey.
Emily writes the novel Wuthering Heights.
1847: Publishers reject The Professor.
Charlotte writes her second novel, Jane Eyre.
October 1847: Smith, Elder and Co. of London publishes Jane Eyre. The novel is credited to
Currer Bell.
December 1847: Thomas Cautley Newby publishes Agnes Grey and Wuthering Heights. The
novels are credited to Acton Bell and Ellis Bell, respectively.
July 1848: Anne and Charlotte travel to London and reveal their identities to their
publisher.
September 24, 1848: Branwell dies, most likely of tuberculosis.
December 19, 1848: Emily dies of tuberculosis.
May 28, 1849: Anne dies of tuberculosis.
June 1849: Newby publishes Anne’s second novel, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall. The novel is
credited to Acton Bell.
October 1849: Smith, Elder and Co. publishes Charlotte’s third novel, Shirley. The novel is
credited to Currer Bell.
1850: Charlotte reveals the sisters’ identities to the public.
January 1853: Smith, Elder and Co. publishes Charlotte’s fourth novel, Villette.
June 29, 1854: Charlotte marries Arthur Bell Nicholls, a colleague of her father.
March 31, 1855: Charlotte dies, most likely of tuberculosis and complications from pregnancy.
1857: Smith, Elder and Co. publishes Charlotte’s first novel, The Professor, for
the first time.
