dance, or act! I think I’ll stick with soccer.”
They laugh. Lida is disappointed, but he’s probably
right. They start to walk down the hall side by side. Jay
reaches out and gently touches Lida’s hand. Lida reaches
back. They’re holding hands while walking down the hall.
They approach Lida’s friends Robin and Penny.
When she sees them, Lida takes her hand away from Jay
abruptly. She likes Jay, but she’s a little embarrassed and
not ready to show public affection yet. They have a quick
conversation with Robin and Penny. When they leave, Jay
asks: “Are you okay?”
“Yeah,” says Lida. She reaches her hand back out to Jay,
and they continue walking.
This is an example of a healthy relationship. Here’s how we

Are they having fun?
Yes. They are both happy when they’re around each other.
Can Lida be herself?
Yes. She is allowed to be happy and excited around Jay,
and she feels comfortable. She can have her opinions and
beliefs about theater without being punished for it.
Can Jay be himself?
Yes. He is allowed to be happy and excited to see Lida, and
he feels comfortable. He can have his opinions and beliefs
