What does it mean to be alive? Scientists define a living
thing as something made from one or more cells that
can reproduce, grow, move, and respond to the world
around it. Earth’s living things can look very different
from one another. Tiny bacteria are living things. So
are green grasses and towering trees. Humans, sharks,
hummingbirds, geckos, and bees are living things too.
