You will need:
A small piece of eggshell
A small bowl
A plate to cover the bowl
Juice of a lemon
Acids often work slowly,
but they can have a
powerful effect. These two
experiments show you
what the acid in lemon
juice can do.
Put the eggshell
in the bowl and
pour the juice
over it.
Eggshells contain
calcium
carbonate
(chalk). The acid in the
lemon juice
dissolved
the calcium
carbonate. The carbonate became
carbon dioxide and the
calcium
floated away. If you look
carefully, you can see that the
lemon juice looks slightly milky.
What
happened?
1
What happens to the
eggshell? How long
does it take for the
eggshell to disappear?
3
Cover the bowl and
leave it for three days.
