Experiments with a Lemon - page 7

Like eggshell, bones contain
calcium. Calcium is what makes
them hard. The lemon juice
dissolved the calcium, so the
bone became bendy.
What
happened?
Acid rain
Pollution from power plants and factories
combines with water vapor in the air, making the
rain slightly acid. Acid rain acts on buildings and
statues, particularly those made of soft stone such
as limestone and sandstone, like the lemon juice
acts on the eggshell. Over several years, acid rain
slowly dissolves the stone. This is called erosion.
u
The face of this statue has been eroded by acid rain.
Repeat the eggshell experiment, but this
time soak a chicken bone in lemon juice
for three to five days. One of the small
bones from the wing works well. What
do you think will happen to the bone?
Were you right?
