atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan. Three
days later, it dropped another bomb on
Nagasaki. Japan surrendered. World War
II was over. (The war in Europe had ended
with German surrender in May.)
Americans didn’t forget about Pearl
Harbor after the war. People around the
country continue to honor December 7 as
Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. In 1962,
the USS
Arizona
Memorial opened. The
184-foot-long (56.1 m) memorial spans the
sunken
Arizona
. The top of the ship is vis-
ible below the murky water. Oil continues
to leak from the ship. Drops of oil collect
on the surface of the water. Some people
call them “black tears,” or the “tears of the
Arizona
.” A marble wall inside the memo-
rial lists the names of all 1,177 men killed
aboard the ship.
In 2016, Japanese prime minister Shinzo
Abe visited the memorial. He and U.S.
president Barack Obama dropped flowers
