Within weeks, the
Pennsylvania
,
Tennessee
,
and
Maryland
were ready for service. The
West Virginia
,
Nevada
, and
California
were
also eventually repaired. The
Arizona
,
Okla-
homa
, and
Utah
could not be saved. But
divers recovered guns and other equipment
from them.
In June 1942, many of the repaired ships
took part in the Battle of Midway. Four of
the six Japanese aircraft carriers from the
Pearl Harbor attack were sunk in the battle.
(The other two carriers were sunk in battle
in 1944.) The American victory at Midway
marked a turning point in the war. After-
ward, Japan suffered a series of defeats.
