The Oilers’Milan Lucic
battles with a Flames player.
BATTLE OF ALBERTA
The WHA’s plan to have a team in Edmonton and a
team in Calgary failed. The rivalry finally came alive in
1980. That’s when the NHL’s Atlanta Flames moved to
Calgary. Things really grew heated in the late 1980s.
Either Calgary or Edmonton made it to the Stanley Cup
Final eight straight years from 1983–1990. Edmonton
had the upper hand in the playoffs. The Oilers have
beaten the Flames four times in the postseason. The
last came in 1991. Edmonton upset Calgary in Game 7
of the first round. Esa Tikkanen scored the clinching
goal in overtime.
