Ihomeless children lived on the streets of New
York City. During the day, the children begged for
food and money. At night, they took shelter under
doorways. A minister named Charles Loring Brace
was horrified by the children’s living conditions.
In an attempt to solve the problem, Brace founded
the Children’s Aid Society (CAS). CAS protested
child labor and created schools for child workers.
Many charities tried to help orphans. Here, a
group of orphans goes on an outing in New York.
