a gentle hand on her shoulder. “Mrs. Fulston wants you in
her office.”
“The assistant principal?” Mari’s brows drew together.
“Did I do something wrong?”
“I’m sure it’s just about this morning.”

It was not about this morning.
Mari walked into the office and was surprised to see both
of her parents and Mrs. Moore, the school’s counselor, there.
Karen and Nicholas Manos did not just take off of work and
show up at the high school in the middle of the day. Mari
immediately noticed the line between her mother’s eyes and
the deep-set frown lines around her father’s mouth.
This was not good.
Even Mrs. Fulston, the AP, looked irritated.
Mrs. Moore looked embarrassed.
“Hello, Mari,” Mrs. Fulston began, motioning for her to
sit in the chair between her parents. “Sorry to interrupt your
lunch, but the administration thinks this is an important mat-
ter, and it would be best to resolve it quickly.”
“What?” Mari asked, fear and worry in her voice, looking
back and forth from the principal to her parents.
“I have spoken with your parents about the incident this
morning.” Mrs. Fulston’s hair was a frosted-blonde football
helmet, and there were creases around her eyes and lips. “The
administration has come up with some new accommodations
we would like to add to your 504 plan.”
Mari had a legal document set up by the school that listed
the accommodations she needed to be successful at school. It
