     Mrs. Tramill shook her head. “That’s awful.
            Kids can be so mean—and foolish! That child
            should be celebrated. He knows two languages!”
               “Three, actually. His dad is from Denmark,
            and his mom is from Jamaica. So he speaks
            English, Danish, and Patois,” Lisa said. “He’s a
            real international kid!”
               “I wish I could meet him. I studied
            languages a bit, you know, at Harvard…”
               Lisa smiled and cut her off before she could
            continue.
               “It’s so hard when kids are mean,” Lisa said.
            “I think that’s why I like dogs so much!”
               “Dogs don’t judge or care what people look
            like,” Mrs. Tramill said. But then her eyes
            drifted away. “Well, except for…”
               And then Mrs. Tramill told Lisa all about
            Duke the miniature schnauzer—and how he
            barked at anyone in a baseball cap. “Just hated
            those things and anyone who wore them.”
