                          The Statue of Liberty

In 1886, the Statue of Liberty was completed on a small
island in New York Harbor. During the second half of
the nineteenth century, the Statue of Liberty became a
symbol of immigration. The figure was the first landmark
immigrants saw when they arrived to the country by ship.
The monument represents the United States’ welcoming
        embrace of all people.

                                      The Statue of Liberty National
                                      Monument also includes nearby Ellis
Island. Over 12 million immigrants came
through Ellis Island from 1892 to 1954.

The Statue of Liberty was a gift from France
                         for America’s 100th birthday in 1876.
