MUTATIONS



                        Everyone’s genome contains mutations.


                        The HGP showed that there was a lot of



                        variation between people’s genomes. Many



                        mutations are harmless. Others can lead


                        to disease.


                            Chris Tyler-Smith and a team of



                        researchers created the 1,000 Genomes



                        project. They set out to estimate how many


                        mutations people had. The researchers


                        analyzed the DNA of 179 people from



                        four countries. They estimated that there



                        are about 400 mutations in the average
