BIASES AND OPINIONS IN STORIES

A single story can be told in many different

ways. Word choice used in the story makes

a difference. The sources that a journalist

interviews are important too. Even details

the journalist leaves out affect how the story

                      is viewed.

Imagine a murder trial is taking place.

One reporter may say the defendant

was “a quiet man who teared up as the

charges were read.” Another reporter may

describe him as “standing 6 feet (1.8 m) tall

and glaring at the judge.” Both descriptions

can be true. But they can also be biased.
