Worth Saving
Farmers throughout the United States are committed to agricul-
tural practices that are sustainable, respectful of the environment,
and protective of wildlife habitat. Prevalence is growing of no-till
farming and other innovative, environmentally sound practices. A
variety of programs offer farmers incentives to take part of their
land out of crop production and turn it into habitat so species
that have disappeared might once again return. By participating
in habitat exchange programs, farmers are helping save monarch
butterflies, greater sage grouse, and other species whose pop-
ulations have dramatically declined. As these and other efforts
continue in the future, perhaps there will come a time when there
is no longer a need for an endangered species list.
