consumer awareness of their products and grow their customer
base. Those who specialize in SMM understand that ads seen
on smartphones and tablets need to feature prominent, easy-to-
read fonts, bright colors, and eye-catching photos and anima-
tion. Their creative skills include having a keen eye for art and
color, an understanding of type fonts, and knowledge of the way
logos, photos, and other graphic elements come together in dis-
tinctive product designs.
While graphic designers mainly work on computers, most
are skilled illustrators who also work with pens, colored pen-
cils, crayons, and paints. When brainstorming with clients, they
sketch out rough prototypes of design concepts. After ideas are
fi nalized, graphic designers create ads using industry standard
graphic design applications such as Adobe Photoshop, Dream-
weaver, Illustrator, and InDesign. However, as graphic designer
Jonathan Leahy Maharaj notes on the Silicon Republic website:
“Don’t think that technology is the answer to all of your prob-

wise it’s useless.”
How Do You Become a
Graphic Designer?
Education
Most graphic designers develop a love for photography, draw-
ing, painting, and even type fonts when they are in middle or high
school. Those thinking of pursuing a career in graphic design can
take a number of high school courses, including art, commercial
art, computer applications, desktop publishing, web design, and
graphic design. These classes help improve students’ computer
skills and creative thinking as they complete assignments that
might include producing posters, party invitations, page layouts,
T-shirt designs, memes, paintings, sculptures, and photographic
essays.
