               monstrous characters from the Greek myths, including a dragon (top
               center) and Cerberus (lower right), the fearsome three-headed dog
               that guarded the underworld’s outer borders.

               The general belief was that, left unchecked, some spirits of the
               dead would escape Hades’s subterranean kingdom and return to
               their hometowns to haunt and terrify the living. Thus, many Greeks
               viewed Cerberus as providing a valuable service to human society.
