advocate: to speak out about a cause
body camera: a device worn by the police to record police
interactions with community members
choke hold: the use of force to block a person’s airway, restricting
their breathing
city council: a group of elected officials who oversee city laws and
policies
de-escalate: to lower the risk of violence
dignity: the state of being worthy of respect and honor
lynching: a killing, most often by hanging, of a person by a group
without due process
no-knock warrant: a document that allows police to enter a
person’s home without knocking or ringing the doorbell
suffragist: a person advocating for voting rights
Supreme Court: the highest court in the United States
systemic racism: patterns and policies that enforce discrimination
based upon race
