The female red wolf charged out of her den and ran through the forest.
She didn’t go far, though. As soon as she reached tall grass and tree shadows, she stopped.
She had bolted when she heard and smelled a human coming close to her den. Fleeing was
her way of leading this possible danger away from her ten-day-old pups. From her hiding
spot, she listened and sniffed for clues that the intruder was staying away from her family.
