ARMISTICE
a treaty or an agreement stopping
acts of open warfare
AUTONOMOUS
having the freedom to act or exist
independently; to self-govern
COMPENSATION
payment; sometimes made to make up
for wrongful imprisonment
CONSCRIPTION
law that requires eligible people to sign
up for military service
INDIGENOUS
originating in a certain place
INTERNMENT CAMPS
work camps used to confine people,
usually in remote areas
QUARANTINE
a period of isolation to reduce the
spread of a contagious disease
QUARTERMASTERS
army officers responsible for providing
clothing, food, and other supplies
to troops
SHARES
equal parts of a company that entitle
their owners to an equal part of
the profit
SNIPER
a soldier who shoots others from a
place of hiding, usually at long range
STOCK MARKETS
where dealers publicly trade stocks
and shares of companies
SUFFRAGE
the right to vote in elections
UNIONS
organized groups of workers formed
to protect and advance their rights
and interests and to bargain with
employers on behalf of all its members
