3 Looking Back
LGBTQ people were not always treated well
in Canada. Until May 1969, it was illegal to be
gay in Canada. Many people did not view
gay people as equals. They did not have the
same rights as other Canadians.
In the early 1970s, gay and lesbian people
began to protest against unfair treatment.
