     PRESERVING
                                              BIODIVERSITY
ndividual Canadians can help preserve biodiversity.
ICanadians can volunteer at wildlife sanctuaries or
clean up litter from parks and rivers. They can grow
gardens filled with many different species of local
plants. This creates habitats for birds, bats, bees, and
butterflies. Theseanimals are all valuable members
of their ecosystems. Families can also keep their pets,
especially cats and dogs, inside or secured outside
to protect local wildlife. Theycan reduce their use of
pesticides and chemical fertilizers in home gardens and in
                                       commercial agriculture.
Hikers should stay on clearly marked paths in national parks so
they do not harm the local biodiversity.
                                                                                                                       27
