SUMMER SPORTS
ndigenous Peoples have been involved in many summer
sports. These include long-distance running, water polo,
Iand boxing.
Tom Longboat was one of the most famous athletes
of the early 1900s. He was born in a Six Nations community.
In 1907 he entered the Boston Marathon. This marathon is
held in Boston, Massachusetts, in the United States. He
raced in front of a crowd of 100,000 people. Longboat
won, defeating 123 other runners. He beat the previous
marathon record by nearly five minutes. After the Boston
Marathon he continued to blow away the competition.
He ran a marathon against the British champion Alfie
Shrubb in 1909 at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
Waneek Horn-Miller played in the 2000 Summer Olympic water
polo game against the United States.
