WOMEN IN SUMMER SPORTS
Waneek Horn-Miller was cocaptain of Canada’s first Olympic women’s water polo
team. The team finished fifth at the Sydney Olympics in 2000. She is Mohawk
from the Kahnawake community. As a teenager Horn-Miller was involved in the
1990 Oka Crisis. The Oka Crisis was a 78-day standoff in Oka, Quebec, between
Mohawk protesters and law enforcement. Horn-Miller was badly injured. Once
she healed, she used the memory of that experience to help push her toward
her goal of going to the Olympics.
