Chapter One
INTRODUCTION
ou come home from school one day and notice that your
neighbours have a sign outside their front door. “It’s a boy!”
Yit reads. They must have brought home their new baby. But
what does it mean to be a boy or girl?
Gender is the biological differences between males and
females. Often this refers to a person’s birth sex and the differences
in body parts, shapes, and hormones. However, a person might
be born biologically either male or female but identify with the
other sex. In other words, they feel like a boy even though they
were born as a girl. Or the other way around. Some people feel
they are neither male nor female, but somewhere in between.
People who have a different identity to their birth sex sometimes
suffer from discrimination and bullying. They are treated badly
by some people because they are different.
Makeup is one way we express ourselves.
