Chapter Two
GENDER IDENTITY
our neighbour’s baby was born with boy body parts. This
makes his sex male. The body parts we are born with mean
Ythat we’re male or female. This is our sex. This is sometimes
called our assigned gender. Gender can also refer to how people
see themselves. This is called gender identity. Sometimes, this
isn’t the same as biological sex. If a person has a gender identity
that’s different from their sex at birth, they might call themselves
transgender. If someone’s biological sex and gender identity are
the same, they are called cisgender. People who don’t feel either
male or female might call themselves non-binary.
Gender identity is what we feel we really are. This is affected
by our biology but also by the type of life we live, where we grow
up, how we develop, and family and friends around us. For many
people, gender identity and assigned gender are the same.
We all just want to be our true selves.
