But Dani wasn’t in Northbrook where her best
friend Ella lived.
Not even Ella was there for Easter break. She’d
gone away with her mother and little sister to the
island, to clean winter out of the house.
She was busy sweeping spiders’ webs and dead flies
from the windows and sills. Her mother could deal
with the droppings under the kitchen sink.
They scrubbed and swept because soon Paddy—
Ella’s extra father—would be arriving at the island,
and by then they wanted everything spic and span,
inside and out.
