What gear do i need?
Your tent is more than
a place to sleep. If the
weather turns nasty
during your trip, the tent
will also be your family
room and dining room.
When you shop for a tent,
get inside it and imagine
living in it for a few days.
Could you easily change
clothes in it? Could you
sit up in it to eat or play
a game with your tent-
mates? Choose a tent you
feel comfortable in.
The label on a tent might say “2-man,” “3-man,” or “4-man,”
but check for yourself. If you’re looking for a 3-person tent,
put yourself, two friends, and three sleeping bags in the tent.
Do you have enough room? If you think you’d feel cramped in
the 3-man tent, get the 4-man tent instead.
The fly is a waterproof sheet that shields the tent from rain.
It hangs a few inches above the sides and top of the tent. The
gap between the fly and the tent lets air circulate around the
tent. That helps the tent stay cool in hot weather and warm in
cool weather.
