As the ship continued on its journey, it was moving fast
toward icy waters. Each day Captain Edward J. Smith ordered
the crew to increase the ship’s speed. When other ships sent
radio messages that they had spotted icebergs in the sea,
Smith changed course to avoid them. He took the Titanic
farther south than originally planned. Smith did not expect to
meet icebergs on the new route. But after four days of smooth
sailing, the Titanic was unknowingly racing toward disaster.
