“It’s weird to be in a classroom with just
three other kids,” I say. (And frankly, Athena and
Moe don’t look much like kids to me.)
“Well, what did you expect?” Rhiannon asks
smugly. “Twenty new genies? Thirty? A hundred?
This isn’t exactly a common human condition.
There are only twelve genie families in all of the
world, and they don’t always produce new genies
at the same time.”
“You mean thirteen families,” I say.
“No,” she says firmly. “I mean twelve. Now
let’s get back to work.”
Rhiannon turns to the board, and Rafael
leans toward me again. “I thought such a small
class was weird, too, on my first day,” he says.
We grin at each other, then turn our
attention to Rhiannon, who has waved a finger
and made words appear on the board:
