Thousands of nobles served under the
Sapa Inca. They gave him advice and
helped him run the empire. Being a noble
was a great honor. Nobles enjoyed wealth
and comfort. The Sapa Inca gave them
land and servants. Every noble wore an

. These ornaments made it
easy for other people to identify them as
government officials.
Four governors reported directly to the
Sapa Inca. Each governor was in charge
of one section of the empire. Other
nobles ruled smaller towns and villages.
These nobles made sure the local people
followed Inca law. Breaking the law had
