Religion was another important part
of Inca life. The two most powerful gods
were Viracocha and Inti. But the Incas
worshipped many gods and goddesses.
Many were based on nature. Illapa was
the god of thunder and rain. Mama Quilla
was the goddess of the moon.
CHILDREN OF THE SUN
The Incas believed Viracocha created the world.
Afterward, he traveled to Lake Titicaca in the
Andes Mountains. There, he created the sun,
moon, animals, and people. He gave each group of
people their own
culture
. The Incas had a special
relationship with the god Inti. They believed he
protected them and helped their crops grow. They
called themselves the “children of the sun.”
