In 1860, players started using a puck


                       instead of a ball.


                          Women have been playing hockey


                       for at least 130 years. In 1892, the first


                       organized women’s teams began playing


                       in Barrie, Ontario. Two years later, the


                       first women’s college team formed. They


                       played at Queen’s University in Kingston,


                       Ontario. The local archbishop did not


                       want women to play hockey. But the team


                       ignored him. Two more college teams


                       formed in 1896.


                          During World War I (1914–1918),


                       women’s hockey became more popular


                       than ever. More than 400,000 Canadian


                       men were fighting in Europe. As a result,
