                GLOSSARY

ERA – Earned run average, the number of runs a pitcher allows in nine innings, without the aid of
an error or a passed ball.

fatigue – Weariness or exhaustion from labor, exertion, or stress.

heat – A fastball thrown at full speed that often appears to rise slightly as it nears home plate.

meatball – An easy-to-hit pitch thrown down the middle of the strike zone.

unglued – To become upset or disordered.

walk-off – A hit or other action in the bottom of the final inning of a game that results in a
game winning run for the home team. After the winning run, the team can walk off
                          the field.

WHIP – The sum of a pitcher’s walks and hits, divided by the total innings pitched. This statistic is
used to evaluate a pitcher’s performance. The lower the number the better!

wild pitch – A pitch that is so far out of the strike zone that the catcher can’t control it,
                           causing base runners to advance.

zone – A place that can be physical or mental. In baseball, the strike zone is the area where the
pitcher has to place the ball in order to get a strike. Getting in the zone means to
concentrate and get your focus into one place.
