THE MIRACLE GIRL
It was July 25, 1956. An ocean liner had
recently left Italy for New York. It was called
the
Andrea Doria
. There were several famous
people on board. One passenger was 14-year-old
Linda Morgan. She was not famous—yet.
After dinner, Morgan went to bed. While
she slept, the
Andrea Doria
sailed into disaster.
People said the
Andrea Doria
was the safest
ship ever. It had many safety features. There
were watertight compartments and fireproof
walls. These divided the ship into three zones.
The 16 lifeboats could hold all of the ship’s
passengers. They even had room to spare.
The
Andrea Doria
was also known for its
beauty and luxury. There were libraries and
gyms. Areas were set aside for movies and
dancing too. The ship was richly decorated.
