Murals and tapestries covered the walls. It also
had the latest technology. This included air
conditioning.
Around 11:00 p.m., the crew saw something
on the radar. Another ship was approaching. It
appeared to be several miles away. The other
ship was a Swedish ocean liner called the
Stockholm
. Its crew had also noticed the
Andrea
Doria
.
An officer on the
Stockholm
looked through
his binoculars. Somehow, the other ship was
right in front of them. He yelled for the
Stockholm
to turn sharply. The
Andrea Doria
made a quick
turn too.
Then the unthinkable happened. The
Stockholm
rammed right into the
Andrea Doria
.
Built for breaking up ice, the bow of the
Stockholm
was strong. It easily sliced through
the side of the
Andrea Doria
. Water poured
in, and the ship rolled over. Lights flickered.
Then they went out. Frightened passengers ran
through the dark passageways.
Both ships sent distress signals. Other boats
raced to help. The
Stockholm
