sex workers. They did not have another
way to support themselves. Many of them
were rejected by their families. They formed
communities. They found acceptance
in these communities. Violence against
sex workers is common. Trans women
protected each other. They made sure
everyone was safe. Many states and cities
had rules against prostitution. Trans women
were often arrested.
Many cities also had laws against
cross-dressing. One of the earliest of
these was a law in Columbus, Ohio. This
law was passed in 1848. It made it illegal
