LAWS AND OPPOSITION
Throughout much of the 1900s, the term
transgender did not exist. Other labels
were given to people who dressed and
lived as the opposite sex. Some were
called cross-dressers. Others were called
transvestites. The term transgender did not
exist until 1971. Many trans people were
discriminated against. It was hard for them
to find jobs. Some trans women became
