Western countries colonized other
countries. They influenced local cultures.
Some cultures became less accepting of
trans people over time. For example, British
people colonized India in the mid-1800s.
They brought with them narrow ideas
about gender. A British official enacted
a law in 1871. It was called the Criminal
Tribes Act. It treated hijra people as
criminals. Hijras identify with a third gender.
