CHAPTER ONE
Making
Money: Build
Your Income
Over the years there have been many sayings about money that
are so often repeated that they have become clichés:
“Money doesn’t grow on trees.”
“You get what you pay for.”
“A penny saved is a penny earned.”
“You can’t take it with you.”
As trite as these sayings may be, they have one thing in com-
mon: They are all essentially true. While money may lend itself
to corny sayings, the fact is that it is one of the most important
things in modern life. Without money, manufacturers could not
build factories to produce goods (although no one would have
money to buy them anyway). Artists could not be paid to create
paintings, music, books, or fi lms. Farm crops would rot in the
fi elds for lack of money to buy them.
The importance of money leads to the question of how to ac-
quire this essential commodity. Since money truly does not grow
on trees, teens must fi nd a way to get the money they need to live
in the world’s money-based economy.
