GLOSSARY
BACKDOOR: a way to bypass normal security measures to access a computer system.
Once a backdoor is established, an attacker can use it again and again.
BITCOIN: digital currency used for online transactions. Unlike traditional currency,
Bitcoin does not exist in the form of bills or coins. It is not issued or controlled by a
central bank.
BOT: short for robot, a software application that automatically performs tasks online.
Some bots run fake social media accounts. Other bots are used in DDoS and other
cyberattacks.
BOTNET: a network of bots or “zombie” computers and devices remotely controlled
by an attacker
CLASSIFIED: kept secret by the government for reasons of national security
CONFIRMATION BIAS: the tendency to believe information that confirms one’s existing
beliefs
CRYPTOCURRENCY: a digital, encrypted currency such as Bitcoin
CRYPTOGRAPHY: the practice of writing and breaking secret codes
CYBERBULLYING: threatening or bullying a person via social media or other
internet-based communications
CYBERESPIONAGE: using the internet and computer networks to illegally access
private data
CYBEREXTORTION: using ransomware to freeze data, a computer network, or a
website until a ransom is paid
CYBERSECURITY: protecting websites and computer networks from malware and
cyberattacks
CYBERSTALKING: using social media and other internet-based communications to
follow or harass someone
CYBERTERRORISM: politically motivated crimes and attacks on computer systems,
designed to disrupt business, communications, and government networks; sow fear;
and endanger lives and property
DECRYPTION: deciphering coded messages
DISINFORMATION: false information spread deliberately to influence public opinion
or to obscure the truth
