GLOSSARY



                   anabolic steroids: drugs that promote muscle growth and are sometimes abused by athletes

                   changeup: a slow pitch in baseball thrown with the same motion as a fastball so as to deceive
                   the batter

                   clutch: a high-pressure situation, often late in a game or in the playoffs

                   commissioner: the executive in charge of a sports league

                   earned run average (ERA): the average number of earned runs a pitcher gives up per nine
                   innings

                   elevation: a measure of how far something is above sea level

                   exit velocity: the speed at which the ball leaves the bat
                   full count: when the count to the batter is three balls and two strikes

                   kinetic energy: the energy of motion

                   launch angle: the angle at which the ball leaves the bat

                   line drive: a batted ball hit in a nearly straight line usually not far above the ground
                   RBI: a run in baseball that is driven in by a batter

                   slider: a breaking pitch that is faster than a curveball but with less movement

                   upset: an unexpected defeat

                   walk-off: ending a baseball game by causing the winning run to score for the home team in the
                   bottom of the last inning
